Co-creating a student-run design firm
In this presentation our team of four teachers will show how we co-designed the Pathway course with our students. Pathway students learn technical making skills and find local problems they can work on using: stained glass, 3D modeling, 3D printing, rapid prototyping, photography, videography, audio recording and production, and much more. In Pathway we: “Make. Reflect. Repeat.”
Join us as we show what can happen when adults and students co-design a culture founded on a dogged commitment to iteration through feedback.
Pathway is a ½ day elective CTE experience at On Track Academy – an Options Public High School for Juniors and Seniors in Spokane Washington. On Track Academy serves students from the Spokane Area who want to own their learning and explore their own personal “What’s Next?” plans while still in high school. While we are designated as a Washington State “Alternative Learning Environment” we’re so much more than just a high school for kids who don't fit the big box.
Matthew Green
About them: Matthew Green is a curious mutt. He’s been working in public education for almost twenty years, the last ten in maker education in non-traditional public schools & a nonprofit makerspace. Matthew joined On Track Academy last year to help build the Pathway program with his incredible partners. Matthew loves to make stuff with his kids and students, particularly things you can program and touch. Matthew writes occasionally about his craft and has just completed his principal certification, hoping to help further Constructionist learning opportunities in Spokane.

Erin Bangle
Bio:
Erin Daniels Bangle has been working with teenagers for 22 years as a teacher in classrooms in Idaho and Washington, or as an advisor for an all-city newspaper at the Spokesman Review in Spokane, WA. She landed at On Track Academy in 2009 where she has worn many hats: English, art, photography, and yearbook instructor as well as media specialist and her preferred title: Queen of Awesome. Erin's current assignment includes teaching stained glass and the art and science behind it as she builds the Pathway program with her colleagues.

Daniel DC Parker
Bio:
Daniel DC Parker has been working with On Track students in some capacity for five years. First as a consistent on-site substitute, then landing as the Digital Media specialist in the new CTE/STEAM branch called Pathway after achieving a Masters in Teaching at Gonzaga University. Daniel is a self-described generalist with a wide ranging skill set. Many of his student's projects begin digitally: from audio and video production to photography and graphic design, but his real passion is seeing digital projects become physical products. Daniel's goal is to encourage learners to say yes to their ideas, and then use that fuel to build the skills that bring their ideas into the world.

Kevin Fagg
Bio:
Kevin Fagg is going on his 4th year of teaching within the Spokane Public School District. He has spent two years at NEWTECH Skills Center teaching Project Management, and is now going on his second year at the On Track Academy. Kevin teaches Project Management and Engineering By Design in the new Pathway Branch, a half day elective experience for students. Kevin works with his colleagues to continually improve and build the innovative Pathway program each year.
